SEO Search Engine Optimization

Simply building a website is not enough to attract visitors.

If you want to drive traffic, your website must appear in search engine results pages. Suppose you own a hotel in the island of Santorini, Greece. Among your potential customers are European and Greek tourists who want to book a room, and for that they visit Google (world's most popular search engine) and type "santorini greece hotels" into the search window. About 18.5 million results will appear.

As you probably understand, your prospective client will not look into all of the results, but will search within the first 20 results shown (first two pages of results). According to relevant statistics, if a user does not find what s/he's looking for within the first 20 results shown, s/he will then perform a new search query using different keywords. Consequently, you not only need to build your website, but also take the necessary steps to promote it.
In order to attract traffic to your website, you need your website to appear within the first 20 results, or better within the first 10 results for the keywords you want to rank in search engines (in this case "santorini greece hotels"). This process is called "website promotion".

There are two main techniques of website promotion that can be employed, depending on the type of industry the business belongs to and on how competitive the industry is. The first technique focuses on the optimization of organic search results (Search Engine Optimization - SEO), while the second one includes paid advertising and creation of advertising campaigns on Google Adwords.

Organic results appear on the left side of Google's search engine results pages, whereas on the right appear the "sponsored links" of websites that have paid Google in order to be prominently displayed. When a website appears on top of the organic search results, it is more likely to attract visitors for free, but the traffic volume is not easy to predict and it takes a lot of effort to appear on top of search results. Costs to optimize a website in order to appear on top of serach results depend on how competitive are the keywords the website wants to rank. On the other hand, creating an advertising campaign and appearing in the right column of the search results attracts paid visitors (cost per visitor - Pay Per Click). Costs are ongoing but are fixed and results are immediate.
