What does "domain in quarantine" mean? Print

  • 0

A domain name is put into quarantine, for a certain period of time, once it expires. The quarantine period differs, depending on the domain TLD:

.gr domain names are put into quarantine for 15 days
.eu domain names are put into quarantine for 40 days
.com domain names are put into quarantine for 40 days

A domain name put in quarantine is temporarily deactivated and can be renewed only by its owner. If the domain name is not renewed during the quarantine period, then it is available for registration on a first-come-first served basis. (.com domains are not immediately available after the quarantine period is over. Depending on their popularity, they enter into a redemption phase.)

Customers are advised to renew their domain names before they are put into quarantine, so as to make sure that no extra costs will occur.
